Online Grocery Sales Hit a Record High of $10.5B in October
Online grocery sales spiked by 28% year over year to $10.5 billion in October, with all three receiving methods posting sales growth, according to the Brick Meets Click/Mercatus Grocery Shopper Survey. It was a record high for online grocery sales and was the second month in a row that online sales growth exceeded 20%. Delivery channels saw the biggest growth, skyrocketing 46% to $4.8 billion, which was a new record for the segment. Read more.
Amazon Developing Smart Eyeglasses to Speed Up Deliveries
Amazon is developing smart eyeglasses for its delivery drivers to guide them to, around and within buildings. Known by the internal code name Amelia, the delivery glasses will provide drivers with turn-by-turn navigation on a small embedded screen, along their routes and at each stop. Such directions could shave seconds off each delivery by providing left or right directions off elevators and around obstacles such as gates or dogs. Read more.
Wonder Acquires Grubhub for $650M
Wonder, the food hall and delivery startup, acquired Grubhub for $650 million. Wonder, which operates multi-brand food halls where meals are prepared by chefs and delivered to customers, is rapidly expanding. With 28 locations in the Northeast and plans to grow to 90 by the end of 2025, the company aims to be a major player in the food delivery space.
